Reading Blog #4

This article starts with the origins of the term net art, it came from a software glitch when an e-mail was sent were the only readable term was net. art, leading to the name. It goes through its humble beginnings in the late 90s, being defined by its immediacy, with the overall goal of building an equitable community for the medium, and between 1994 and 1998 the internet allowed for independence, and revolution. It chronicles the evolution of the medium, from the political changes in Europe and America happening around it, and the silicon valley style evolution of Ada. web, to Jodi.org to their eventual monetization, and everything beyond. The community was and still is focused on anti-Corperation, and Anti materialism, and is heavily involved with things like feminism and particularly the cyberfeminism movement. As the internet evolved, the net art community evolved with it, from e-mail to web pages, to forums and chatrooms, and hundreds upon hundreds of different websites were created to express certain ideas and comment on things and even just to have a little fun and expand the community. Though this article particularly covers net art in its heyday (the 90s) I feel like net art has only expanded and exploded over the evolution of the internet, and has still remained focused around anti-corporation and authority, but has been monetized, from more modern examples of things like NFTs or something as simple as running an ad on an artist blog, and I also feel like it has expanded to a much more mainstream audience.
